Operating Services
Operating Services consists of Preoperative Assessment, Operating Theatres, Theatre Admissions Unit and the Recovery areas.
The Preoperative Assessment unit is a nurse led service which is supported by Anaesthetic Consultants and is at the forefront nationally.
The 42 operating theatres at the Trust provides 24 hour peri-operative care covering a range of specialties including, Spinal Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General, Vascular, Renal, ENT, Neuro and Urology.
Shift Patterns
Duty times vary across each speciality to reflect the service and cover the workload as per theatre schedule. A usual shift pattern can be worked between the hours of 8am-7pm over 4 or 5 days. Once staff are trained to the appropriate standard and competence is achieved then out of hours shifts will be allocated to meet service requirements.
Critical Care comprises of three units:
General Intensive Care Unit (ICU) High Dependency Unit (HDU) Post Operative Surgical Unit (POSU) at the NGH site in a purpose-built building and have a total capacity of 36 beds: 18 beds on each floor.
Critical Care Department at the RHH site is based on K floor and has the capacity for 8 critical care beds admitting both HDU and ICU patients.
Critical Care accepts male & female patients aged sixteen years and above who have a wide variety of specialist conditions; including Trauma patients, General Medical and Surgical patients, Plastics, Orthopaedics, Vascular, Renal, Spinal injuries, ENT, Ophthalmic, Gynaecology, Haematology, Oncology and Communicable diseases.
Shift Patterns
We currently offer a mixture of Long Shifts (12.5 hours), with standard shifts (7.5 hours) used to make up the difference in contracted hours.
Internal rotation onto Night Duty is also in place and duty rosters are produced using an e-Rostering system.
Day shift 07.00 – 19.40 Early shift 0700 – 1500
Night shift 1900 – 07.40 Late shift 1130 – 19.40

The Trust uses central assessment centres to recruit all Band 5 Nurses. This means that if you have applied for more than one vacancy with the Trust you will be invited to assessment via one vacancy, this does not mean that you are eliminated from any other Nursing vacancy’s you have applied for with the Trust.
The ambition of our process is to enable you to feel as relaxed as possible so that you are able to demonstrate your knowledge and skills within a supportive environment. Our interview process provides an objective assessment of your skills through group clinical scenarios and an individual interview. The scenarios may be based upon the generic role of the staff nurse/ODP or may include more specialised scenarios pertinent to specialist areas.
The interviewers on the clinical scenario panels may not be working in the area in which you wish to work, this is because nurses at Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust all work to our PROUD principles and we believe that having a wider interview panel will improve the quality of your interview and maintain our objective assessment process.
During the interview process there is an opportunity for you to be interviewed on your own by two senior Trust staff. There will also be an opportunity for you to discuss your clinical interests and discuss the vacancies that we have.
For those staff who are currently employed by the Trust as a Staff Nurse, you should instead apply through the Staff Nurse transfer process via your line manager.
