Ability and willingness to engage at very deep technical levels with the research teams is an absolute requirement of these roles. Sometimes this engagement will require you to learn deep technical details of topics as diverse as (for example) molecular modelling, fluid dynamics, or applications of machine learning. Mathematical skills and the ability to apply these skills are very important in these roles.
Software engineer roles in IBM Research involve working on a variety of projects and technologies. Candidates need to be keen and able to quickly pick up new technology areas as well as grow their client facing skills. We are currently looking for candidates with an interest and experience in High Performance Computing, Big Data, Analytics, or Cognitive Computing. You may be asked to work on any of the technology areas we are researching.
The IBM Research team based at Daresbury is working with the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) on projects to exploit Data Centric Cognitive Computing, and other IBM Research technologies, with leading UK commercial organisations.
People have an on-going focus on a specialism or new technology. These roles will be working as a member of small multi-disciplinary teams led by Research Staff Members and Project leaders.. These roles are a great opportunity to grow your customer facing, software engineering, and research skills.
The roles are based at Daresbury, and are not suitable for remote working. Working in IBM Research means being part of a global team, this means occasional meetings outside local work hours/geography; and working on other IBM/client sites.
In this job role you'll use your expertise in translating IT requirements into great design, as well as development and assembly of components, coding, unit testing and documentation, to create custom solutions for our clients.
Skills:
- Technical knowledge required:
- Software development life cycle - all stages; ability to deliver 'solo' and as team member.
- Technical specifics can vary but may include:
- HPC skills are essential: MPI etc
- Mobile Development
- Requirement Gathering through Design - ability to determine requirements and create design, implement, deploy.
- Web programming (HTML, CSS, J2EE, Ajax, JavaScript, Java, C)
- Networking
- Ability to learn/integrate new technologies skills rapidly, including 'on the job'
- Excellent verbal and written communication, sense of focus, team player, determination to face new challenges and learn
- Problem solving skills: ability to quickly dig to the root of a problem and propose solution options. and to research new technologies and evaluate them against business and/or technology requirements.
- Experience of working with commercial organisations on projects translating research outcomes towards long term solutions is a distinct advantage in this role.
