IBM Research has a long and distinguished history of invention and innovations in the science and engineering. In 2015 IBM Research and the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) announced a major expansion as part of the STFC’s Hartree Centre at Daresbury.  The central aim of this collaboration is to bring researchers from IBM together with STFC and UK Industry to accelerate adoption of new and existing research outcomes. 
IBM is building a new team, based in Daresbury, as part of this work.  There are numerous opportunities within the IBM Research Team at Daresbury.  
 
IBM Research are looking to recruit for the Graphics and Visualization project
 
IBM is working with Nvidia to port the OpenGL to the IBM Power server systems. The project is in phase I which includes the basic port of X-Windows, OpenGL development toolkit and kernel modules. 
The resulting system will provide the functional support to port and run the RTNeuron application that will be used in the Human Brain Project as well as various other visualization applications typically used in scientific/engineering domains.  
IBM will be responsible for insuring that RTNeuron is ported and runs optimally on the IBM Power servers. An enhancement to the base project is the implementation of the EGL output extension for IBM Power servers. 
This will require Power firmware, kernel, and system library innovation. 
The candidate should be skilled in programming with C/C++, OpenGL 3D graphics, and understand basic video BIOS functionality.
 
The role is also requiring experience of technologies such as MPI, machine learning, as well as International research experience -  ideally having previous worked as part of a multinational team. 
 
For the team in Daresbury we are looking for Researchers with a very strong background in computer science or applications of high performance computing in their discipline.  Multi- disciplinary research experience is highly desirable. 
 
The role they are looking for fulfil can be either a Research Staff Member (RSM) or a Post Doc Scientist. 
 
Required 
 
  • PhD/DPhil in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or similar disciplines.
  • Recent, Relevant, Publications recorded in high quality, peer reviewed journals and conferences
  • Currently working in one of the above fields
  • A clear understanding of the state-of-the-art in their field of research and of the current challenges and opportunities in that, and related, areas.
  • Significant experience of high performance computing as a system designer/developer or as a user of large systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent presentation skills, experience of working in research teams
  • Able and willing to relocate to the IBM Research team in Daresbury Cheshire UK – you will be based in Daresbury 5 days a week
