Research on Development and Acceleration of Big Data/Machine Learning workloads
We are looking for Research Staff Members to join our new team of IBM researchers within the Enabling Technologies group at the Daresbury Laboratory of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) focusing on the emerging area of Data-Centric Cognitive Systems. 
The scope of the work is twofold; the development of novel machine learning approaches to accelerate and enable existing efforts and the scale-up of these methods to enable their application to extremely large-scale problems through the use and enhancement of frameworks such as Apache Spark, Caffe, and Torch. 
A successful candidate will have knowledge of, and experience in, at least two of the following topics:
  • Deep neural networks
  • Reinforcement learning
  • Bayesian optimization
Since the research role is centered around the acceleration and scale-out of emerging machine learning and big data workloads from science and engineering leveraging GPUs and other high-performance architectural support, the candidate should also have familiarity and experience with some of the following topics:
  • Distributed computing
  • High performance computing paradigms (MPI, OpenMP)
  • GPU acceleration (CUDA)
  • Big Data frameworks (Apache Spark)

You will need to be able to demonstrate the following key qualities

Working with Leadership: on how to advance science, technology or improve IBM products and services, plus the determination and abilities to make this vision a reality.

Direction Setting: Establishes a clear direction for individual research, projects and Research strategies or IBM Division plans. This requires a keen sense of the technical leverage points, the global environment and customer needs.

Group Leadership: as a technical lead, make decisions to align the contributions of others to achieve greater impact. Establishes schedules and milestones. Contribute to the Initiation of broad new technical programmes vitally important to IBM and secures appropriate external support and funding.

Organisational Building: Work with your senior managers to recruit outstanding and needed skills to strengthen effort and increase team’s impact. If applicable, also actively work to improve skills in a group.

Teamwork: Works effectively within own team/department, within Research, and with internal or external partners.

Teaming: Non-parochial, recognises strengths of other organizations. Works actively to leverage existing IBM resources across worldwide research team. Initiates and encourages organizational changes, consolidations, processes, etc., which improves the team’s effectiveness.

Requirements:

PhD/DPhil in computer science/Machine Learning or equivalent relevant experience
Previous experience with Big Data Analytics

Previous experience with scale-out of machine learning code 
Recent, relevant, publications record in high quality, peer reviewed journals and conferences
A clear understanding of the state-of-the-art in their field of research and of the current challenges and opportunities in that and related, areas
Significant experience of high performance computing as a system designer/developer or as a user of large systems
Strong interpersonal skills, excellent presentation skills, experience or working in research teams
Able and willing to relocate to the IBM Research team in Daresbury, Cheshire, UK
Experience of technologies such as MPI, machine learning
Experience of translating their research outcomes towards operational use via products, services, or working with external partners
International research experience, ideally working as part of a multi-national team
Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary research team
Team leadership experience
