Bourns Limited is based in Bedford and has an established reputation as a leading manufacturer of Circuit Protection Semiconductors, primarily serving the Communications Industry. The Company is a key division of the Bourns Communications Division, which is a significant player in the global market for Electronic Components and Integrated Solutions.

This exciting and challenging position is a key role for the continued and future success of the Communications Division of Bourns. As the leading member of the Bedford Engineering team, this position will report directly to the Director of Engineering – Communications Division, based in the US.

As the Product Engineering Manager you will provide leadership to the local engineering team that supports new product development as well as engineering support for the wafer fabrication facility in Bedford and to contract fabrication facilities across the globe. In this position you will drive projects relating to semiconductor products, processes or systems for improved performance, quality, reliability and profitability. This will include, but is not limited to: Development of new products and processes, automation, mechanized equipment utilizing existing and new, innovative design, concepts, manufacturing techniques or testing methods.

You will organize and direct new FET, TVS diode and Thyristor product development, co-ordinate with process and manufacturing engineering worldwide, whilst also being responsible for all aspects of the new product development process from customer interface to production implementation.

Position Requirements: Degree level from an accredited 3-year college or university in Engineering, Science or Mathematics, or equivalent education, training and experience. MBA or Engineering Management degree would be advantageous.

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following disciplines:

Essential:

Experience in semiconductor technology, design and development with emphasis on surge and ESD protection devices, particularly MOSFET and JFET design as well as bipolar technologies such as transistors, TVS diodes and Thyristors.

  • Proven track record of successfully managing engineering personnel and developing high performance teams.
  • Proven track record of driving semiconductor products to market quickly.
  • Strong project management skills with an expert ability to use MS Project.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in a TS-16949 environment to qualify products to AECQ standards.
  • Knowledge of electrical measurement techniques used in the circuit protection industry.
  • Experience working in circuit protection device characterization, test, reliability and failure analysis.
  • Detailed knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards covering voltage and over current protection.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in semiconductor device assembly and packaging technologies, with particular emphasis on low cost discrete devices.
  • Proven track record of innovation and creativity, through patent disclosures.
  • Demonstrations of expertise and knowledge in particular fields through published articles, participation in Industry Groups (eg IEEE etc).

Candidates must possess a combination of the listed skills acquired in similar positions throughout their career, as well as excellent attention to detail, accountability and creativity, requiring little supervision.

You will be confident presenting to your peers and senior management, possess excellent PC skills as well as effective written and verbal communication capability, along with proven record of writing technical documents e.g. Datasheets, application notes.

Excellent verbal skills are required to communicate instructions and present ideas, concepts and solutions to all levels of employee, supplier and customer worldwide.
