Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute - Horizon Centre for Doctoral Training in My Life in Data

Our digital identities will define the interfaces to the future services that we will use for entertainment, wellbeing, government, transport, energy, retail and finance. They will be constructed from our location history, our personal data, and digital records that capture who, and where, we are and the histories of our digital, and increasingly our physical and social, interactions.

The Horizon Centre for Doctoral Training in My Life in Data will therefore train a community of PhD students with the interdisciplinary skills to address the challenge of digital identity and personal data for the 21st century.

We are recruiting one PhD student to carry out research in partnership with Mobile Life Centre Stockholm, Sweden with a focus on Implicit Interaction

Just as touch interfaces revolutionised the use of mobile devices, other interaction modalities such as speech and body tracking also have the potential revitalise our interactions with digital technologies. This project addresses the future of “implicit interaction”, and the practical and conceptual challenges faced. For instance, what does it mean to design systems that conduct system actions without explicit user interactions? Or those that anticipate future actions? How might these systems 'learn' and be personalised to their users? We envisage the project taking an approach that would involve software development (particularly mobile development) and design work for building prototype implicit user interfaces and systems. The project will be conducted jointly at the University of Nottingham and the Mobile Life Centre at the University of Stockholm in Sweden. The PhD offers the opportunity to study for two years in Nottingham, and two years in Stockholm, as well as the support of two leading HCI research groups. Academic liaison: Stuart Reeves. Partner: Mobile Life Centre (Barry Brown)

Candidates are expected to have a background in computer science, psychology or graphic design for visualisation. Candidates with backgrounds in other STEM subjects will also be considered, if they can demonstrate capabilities in data analytics.

The student will benefit from:

  • A fully-funded four-year PhD programme that integrates a leading-edge research project with research training in interdisciplinary skills.
  • At least one internship with our partner.
  • An enhanced stipend of £16,600 per annum as well as a personal laptop.

We have funding for UK/Home, EU and international students. Places are also available for those in receipt of four year independent funding/scholarships. Application forms are downloadable fromhttp://cdt.horizon.ac.uk/apply/current-opportunities and should be returned by email with a detailed CV, transcript, references and a statement of research interests to Emma.Juggins@Nottingham.ac.uk
