About the Job:

Smiths Detection in Hemel Hempstead is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with Data Management experience to join the company on a permanent basis - supporting the development of advanced technological products to global customers.
The role will be responsible for supporting mechanical design activities during New Product Development, by creating and maintaining engineering product data and ensuring the administration of product data management systems.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assure configuration compliance to hardware, software, documents, specification and company defined standard operating procedures for Smiths Detection PLP processes;
  • Assist the management and administration of the engineering product data management systems, including CAD model file vault, engineering drawing database, and other technical information storage;
  • Create and update engineering product data, including CAD models, detail and assembly drawings, part specification databases, and other technical product information;
  • Support design activities throughout all stages of the product lifecycle, making continuous improvements to reduce cost, ease manufacture, and address problems or issues as necessary;
  • Provide support and guidance to program, project and product teams with respect to all data management activities;
  • Liaise with other team members and departments to ensure product design data is correctly released and available to enable cost effective procurement, manufacture and assembly of the product;
  • Function as a team member on multi-functional project teams across multiple projects;
  • Active member of the Mechanical Engineering Department; working alongside senior members of the team; and continually challenging and improving the departmental processes;
  • Conduct all activities in accordance with the company Quality, Environmental, and Health & Safety standards and procedures.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Engineering or Scientific studies;
  • Previous experience of working in an engineering support role, with knowledge of Systems Engineering Fundamentals and Requirements Management;
  • Experience and training in configuration and data management activities;
  • Proficiency in Mechanical 3D CAD (electrical - an asset) and associated product data management;
  • Excellent IT Skills, with knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint (ERP - an asset);
  • Strong stakeholder management skills;
  • Excellent team worker, with the ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with confidence in dealing with a wide range of people, including suppliers, designers and senior management.
