About the Job:
We are looking for Research Staff Members to join our new team of IBM researchers within the Physical Analytics group at the Daresbury Laboratory of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in Cheshire, focusing on the emerging area of Data Centric Cognitive Systems. Our exciting programme of work includes both fundamental research and exploitation of research outcomes.The scope of the joint work between IBM Research and STFC is at the frontier of big (spatio-temporal) data analytics and modeling as it applies to agriculture, renewable energy, risk and environmental modeling. The highly inter disciplinary project seeks to derive value from merging and combining sensor, satellite, weather, census, economic, and trade data leveraging big data technologies to improve efficiencies in various industries.
The candidate will develop physical, statistical, and machine learning model on global set data sets to detect and monitor spatial and temporal variability from a single location up to continental scale and ranging from a season up to multiple years in advance.
Ph.D. in Physics, environmental sciences, engineering or other relevant science field is required. A strong computational background is required and a basic knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) is expected. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of remote image processing, big data analysis, and integration of real time data, preferably as it applies to agricultural remote sensing, land use change, and hydro climatological analysis.
You will be expected to participate in a programme in engineering, or science with significant positive impact with collaborators in government, industry and academia. Such programmes are typically multiple-year efforts. They evolve from idea or concept formation, to experimentation or prototype development, to application to real problems, services, or products in IBM or the scientific community, and finally in concept refinement and solution enhancement.
You will help establish ways of working effectively, generating innovative ideas and concepts while performing advanced scientific or engineering tasks resulting in highly complex, original and creative scientific or engineering achievements in a specific discipline (chemistry, mathematics, physics, engineering sciences, computational science, computer science, etc.) The key elements are: IMPACT (inside or outside IBM), LEADERSHIP (technical leadership, and group leadership in joint STFC/IBM/3rd party research groups) and TEAMWORK (within Research, with other IBM divisions and with the scientific community). Recognising the diversity of interest, skills and experience, there will be a wide variation of contribution in each of these areas.
You will need to be able to demonstrate the following key qualities

Must haves:
PhD/DPhil in computer science/Mathematics/Physics/Environmental Sciences
Previous experience with Remote sensing/analytics
Proven experience with Environmental Modeling.
Proven experience with GIS
Previous experience with Big Data Analytics
Recent, relevant, publications record in high quality, peer reviewed journals and conferences
Currently working in one of the above fields
A clear understanding of the state-of-the-art in their field of research and of the current challenges and opportunities in that and related, areas
Significant experience of high performance computing as a system designer/developer or as a user of large systems
Strong interpersonal skills, excellent presentation skills, experience or working in research teams
Able and willing to relocate to the IBM Research team in Daresbury, Cheshire, UK
Experience of technologies such as MPI, machine learning, – needs more….
Experience of translating their research outcomes towards operational use via products, services, or working with external partners
International research experience, ideally working as part of a multi-national team
Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary research team
Team leadership experience
